Romanian Aviation Academy A320 Full Flight Simulator

The Romanian Aviation Academy has successfully qualified a new AMST Airbus A320 CEO/NEO Full Flight Simulator at its training centre in Bucharest.
Delivered by AMST, the simulator combines motion, visual and training systems from several specialist technology partners. VIOSO ProjectionTools 6.2 was used to calibrate its demanding collimated visual display, helping achieve the geometric accuracy required across the complete field of view.

Bucharest, Romania, June 2026 - The Romanian Aviation Academy (Scoala Superioara de Aviatie Civila, RAA) in Bucharest has successfully qualified an Airbus A320 CEO/NEO Full Flight Simulator (FFS) supplied by AMST's Civil Aviation division in Nieuw-Vennep, The Netherlands
The qualification marks a significant expansion of RAA's pilot training capabilities and highlights AMST's expertise in delivering advanced flight simulation systems.
The project was realized through close cooperation between RAA and AMST, covering all phases from manufacturing and installation to integration, testing, and qualification support. Key milestones included the precise and timely delivery of the simulator by Gebruder Weiss, the use of specialized installation equipment provided by Mateco Romania, and the seamless technical integration of the motion and visual systems in cooperation with MOOG and RSi.
A notable technical feature of the simulator is the integration of a visual display solution incorporating VIOSO's automatic calibration technology. The system enables precise and efficient alignment of the projected image, helping to ensure high visual fidelity while reducing calibration effort and maintenance time throughout the simulator's operational lifecycle.

Technical summary
Calibrating a demanding collimated display
The installation used VIOSO ProjectionTools 6.2 to calibrate the visual system. Its collimated display is based on a Mylar mirror, creating a particularly demanding calibration environment. This is especially true around the edges of the field of view, where the geometry becomes difficult to represent accurately using a mathematical model alone.
Specially produced slide projections were therefore used as master references for the required image geometry.
Calibration was completed in two stages. First, the display was measured using a theodolite, allowing the initial warping correction to compensate for surface waves and scalloping in the screen. A second warping layer was then applied over the initial correction to compensate for the additional distortions introduced by the Mylar mirror.
This layered approach provided the control needed to align the projected image accurately across the full visual display.
